Key Stage 3 History.

History inspires pupils’ imagination and curiosity through the study of the dilemmas, choices and beliefs of people in the past. It can help pupils to a better understanding of the present and their own identities, encouraging them to ask questions. Pupils study topics with local, national and international aspects, enabling them to make connections within and across different periods and societies.

Pupils learn to ask and answer important questions, evaluating evidence and using this to support their conclusions. They identify, analyse and explain different interpretations of past events and begin to judge the significance of what they are learning.

History develops many key skills for later life and gives pupils the confidence to make their own judgements based on their analysis of the evidence or information that they have.

“History is an unusual discipline. Its core is hard fact that you cannot get away from and have to learn to master. At the same time you have to be deductive, perceptive and imaginative in the use of that fact.”

Dr Christine Carpenter, University of Cambridge.
